Mark DiPietro: After a brief stint developing the Outside Music label in
2004, DiPietro went on to start the digital distribution label Blood & Water (www.bloodandwater.ca) founded in 2007, along with live music promoter Emerge Entertainment (www.emerge.ca).
Phil Klygo: Phil Klygo loves music and has spent most of his life listening to it. Whether it's live shows, cds, lps, mp3s, podcasts, label downloads, oodles of myspace genius, old personally recorded brave new waves radio broadcasts dating back to 1992, 8 tracks, tapes, vinyl 12"s or 7"s, Klygo is a lunatic for the savory sounds of indie music in all shapes and sizes, except for that band Shapes and Sizes... who he can't stand. Klygo, who started writing for Exclaim! Magazine in 1994, had the audacity to start his own fanzine called Skull Geek, which shortly thereafter became a record label as well, releasing the magical and legendary PLANET OF UGLY lp/comix book release with Ratboy & Pecola. In 2002, Klygo started a new label called (weewerk) www.weewerk.com.
PRESS PRAISE FOR TEENAGE USA!
TORONTO STAR (Dec 31, 2000) - "CATALYSTS: PHIL KLYGO AND MARK DIPIETRO"
"The rising profile of their independent Teenage USA Recordings label was enough to land it an investment deal with the multimedia conglomerate Song Corp. this year. The two spent their new money wisely, releasing acclaimed records by the likes of Peaches, Mean Red Spiders and Eric's Trip at a torrid pace - until Song, citing a corporate-culture clash, pulled out at the eight-month mark. The label's output has attracted enough new interest that it should remain a vital component of Toronto's underground music scene."
TORONTO SUN (Dec 14, 2000) - "A TEENAGE BLOWOUT"
"Let's say you run the most-promising and fastest-rising independent record company in Canada. You're on an eight month high, releasing a prolific stream of albums and chalking up reams of positive press. Then, suddenly your wealthy investor pulls out. What do you do? Well, if you're Toronto's irrepressible Teenage USA label, you throw a Party!"
BILLBOARD (Oct 6th, 2001) - "GRASS-ROOTS CANADIAN INDIE GETS TEENAGE KICKS"
"What could be more implausible than a Canadian record label called Teenage USA Recordings? But the name is entirely appropriate for the 4-year-old Toronto-based imprint that may well be the most significant Canadian independent grass-roots label of the decade, even if it's co-owners are neither teenagers nor Americans."
EYE WEEKLY (Nov 7th, 2002) - "BEST BET - TEENAGE USA FIFTH ANNIVERSARY PARTY"
"It may sound like a cliché, but weathering five years in the music business is a significant feat for any indie label these days. The coming-of-age is particularly sweet for Toronto-based label Teenage USA, which marks a half decade in the service of rock with a stacked two-night lineup at Healey's Nov. 8-9. The scrappy imprint was dreamed up by local scenesters Phil Klygo and Mark DiPietro, who started out with the reasonable aim of providing an outlet to a clutch of local indie artists they wanted to hear on record. Teenage USA may yet be remembered as the label that signed Peaches and lost her when she took Berlin, but also among there roster are break-out critical successes Mean Red Spiders, Two-Minute Miracles, Great Lake Swimmers, as well as promising pop-punks The Weekend. Klygo and DiPietro also managed to outlive their rich, short-sighted, parent company, Song Corporation, walking away all but unscathed from the wreckage when Song went south last year."
NOW MAGAZINE (Nov 7th, 2002) - "TEEN TRIUMPH - TEENAGE USA LABEL THRIVES FOR FIVE"
"It's amazing to think Teenage USA's only been around for five years. The story of the ironically named label (they're neither teenagers nor American) has slipped into legend since Phil Klygo and Mark DiPietro teamed up back in 1997. The Jolly Roger-logoed label's impressive 30-album discography includes the launching of brazen belter Peaches, before the electroclash explosion, the near miracle of an Eric's Trip reunion and they've held down Toronto's guitar driven indie rock fort in the face of DJ culture and U.S. bubblegum pop tarts."
